Like many road racers who are known more for their sprinting, than their breakaway threat, I have never gone out and bought gear for time trialing. I accept the humiliation that awaits me, when our times are all posted, and everyone’s suspicions are confirmed, that I only win races by drafting until the last moment. Why then, buy aero wheels, an aero frame, and one of those silly long helmets? Better to turn up on my regular gear, and pretend it’s the bike, not the rider, slowing things down.
Mario Cipollini was likewise not known for time trialing. A pure sprinter, he was. Virginal pure. So pure he refused to be seen to be trying, and instead would turn out dressed as though for a furry convention.
